2016 Construction Summary

It’s been a very busy 2016 for Ferdinand Bilstein UK Ltd and the bilstein group in the UK.

Work commenced in April 2016 on the brand new, state of the art distribution centre being constructed on the northern plot of Markham Vale, in Chesterfield. The new building will centralise the company’s distribution, increasing efficiency around the UK and Ireland by housing febi, SWAG and Blue Print products all under one roof.

Henry Boot Developments have overseen the initial building phase, which was completed on the 30th January 2017. It’s been an incredible task so far. Every tiny detail has been planned and discussed, from the individual door handles and bathroom fixtures, to the floor tiles and light fittings.

The project is still on track. The external building has been completed, the lighting has been installed and the final fixtures are being placed. Final decorations and carpet flooring are due to be completed in January along with the landscaping.

Across this first phase, over 2,500 concrete posts were hammered into the floor in order to support the concrete slabs for the Witron system. Plus, 16,000 pipes have been installed throughout the building to support the sprinkler system. And hundreds of dedicated workers have been employed to build the various elements needed to complete construction.

A local access road was opened at the end of November, giving all site workers a direct route to the new building. This has helped to increase the efficiency of deliveries and general traffic to the site. Once the building is officially up and running, this access road will make it easier for customers, freighters and staff alike to reach the new building, straight off junction 29A of the M1.

The second phase began in November – installing the state of the art, semi-autonomous picking and packing system. This amazing technology will speed up the efficiency of the whole distribution operation, with bespoke picking and packing solutions to get goods to customers. An area of the new warehouse has already been cordoned off for the initial building to begin, and the first equipment is arriving on site ready for the process.

The bilstein group in the UK are very excited about the latest developments at the new site in Markham Vale, Chesterfield and can’t wait to see it progress further. The new distribution centre is a key investment for the company’s continued advancement in the automotive aftermarket, and will help to ensure that both output efficiency, logistics solutions and customer service can grow.
